What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is a ringing, whistling, buzzing or other sound in the head with no external source. It may be heard in one ear, both ears, from afar or up close.
Many of us will experience Tinnitus at some point in our lives. The ringing sound in our ears after being exposed to a loud noise, such as a concert, is short lived tinnitus. For some people however, Tinnitus can be a regular and ongoing part of life, the course of chronic tinnitus is unpredictable. 15-20% of people are affected by Tinnitus.
While some people are not bothered by Tinnitus, for others it can be distressing.
Signs and Symptoms
Noise in the ears that could sound like:
- Ringing
- Buzzing
- Roaring
- Clicking
- Hissing
- Humming
- Whooshing
- Rhythmic pulsing
The noise may be heard in one or both ears and can range from a low to high pitch sound.
